I am an independent museum professional, based in Boston. Although my projects vary widely, I am most known for my work with cities, objects, and creativity. I am an international expert on city museums and blog about urban public humanities topics here at CityStories. I teach Material Culture in the Museum Studies Graduate Program at Tufts University and have been working for many years on deepening the meaning we find in objects. My creativity project with colleague Linda Norris recently culminated in the book Creativity in Museum Practice as well as ongoing workshops and capacity building for museums. In 2010 I was a Fulbright Scholar in Helsinki, Finland, and in 2011 I was a fellow at Brown University’s John Nicholas Brown Center for Public Humanities. Other professional interests include interpretive and strategic planning, exhibition & content development, collections stewardship, placemaking & mapping, psychogeography, sensory history, emotion in museums, and writing of all kinds.

Dear Rainey:
I’ve read almost all your posts–excellent work. Hope to catch up with you soon. Pls drop me a line some time
Still doing great work I see. Hope all is well.
Rainey, you’re several deep breaths of fresh air!
Hope we can talk sometime about Boston area projects.

I’ve been trying to weave together my interests of museums, creative place making and community development – it’s great to see you doing just that! Nice.
Thanks, Amara. Sometimes it feels like museums are operating on a parallel track from the placemaking movement, but I think we’re going to see them come closer and closer together in the next few years.
Rainey, just came across your TEDx Boston talk on curating the Marathon bombing memorial objects. A really powerful, meaningful presentation. For me, one of the last exhibition visitor tags you showed summed it up and made ME cry: if the hate of one person can do so much, what can the love of a city do? What, indeed. Thank you!
